![]() ![]() I like that instead of simply biting adventurers, it might fully swallow them and keep them in its mouth. I like the idea that the eyestalks are all clouded over and once per stalk they can't fire properly, swell up with magical energy and explode, zapping everyone in a radius with a discharge that makes sense based on the spell. ![]() I think anything that conveys the idea that the beholder zombie is just gross and decaying would make a fun addition. They all rolled really bad, and I awkwardly had some of them roll again.and then later again till they eventually found the McGuffin pieces. I also learned a bit of a lesson about having players roll to find loot, when I need to just give them the relevant plot stuff and then have them potentially roll for extra. They looted some fun things from the ancient ritual site, including a "cracked" wand of wonder that I thought the wizard would be more excited about (you can spend multiple charges at once, but it might explode). One character went unconscious, but nobody died. There multiple exchanges along the lines of "Ok, I move around this guy and shoot," "Cool, cool, if you would please make a wisdom save for me first please," "Aww, crap." It kept the players on their toes a bit, and made it riskier to try and kite the horrors around. I did like how they affected the battlefield though. Oh! and I lined some of the walls with powered down gibbering mouthers (no spit, only 10ft save radius) who I don't think did any damage. 5CR beholders from Volo's) came out and shot some more rays. Then, since the two Horrors were still fighting, the beholder corpse exploded and three zombie gazers(? the tiny. The Beholder took to the air and fired off a random ray at a random target within range each round until it was taken out by a handaxe from the barbarian (the player HATES beholders, I think as a result of a previous game, so I gave him the killing blow). In the end, along with the beholder, there were two Helmed Horrors that animated and chased the ranged around the room. Then it targeted him two more times in a row, but he was fine. The beholder did fire off a Disintegration ray first thing, but it was at the rogue and they easily made their save. I'm worried about diluting the fun of the encounter if I just throw in a bunch of minions, so I'm hoping people have ideas for cool abilities I can add that maybe aren't as RNG swingy as a disintegrate ray. ![]() The fear of being disintegrated is nice, but its a single action monster, low ac, against 6 player characters, so I need something to make it more interesting. This week my players will be facing a beholder zombie in some ancient underground ruins. I asked this in the discord and got some ideas, but was hoping to comb the internet brain as well. ![]()
